Alcatel-Lucent announced today that it has been selected by NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s largest mobile network operator and a leader in the adoption of next-generation mobile services,to build the mobile backhaul network for its Long Term Evolution (LTE) service with Alcatel-Lucent’s Ethernet transmission solution. This will enable NTT DOCOMO to meet the increasing end-user service demands in a significantly faster way via very high bandwidth with managed quality of service.

Nortel Hangs On to Its LTE Smarts

Nortel Networks Ltd. isn't selling quite as much to Nokia Siemens Networks as might have first appeared, as the Canadian vendor is holding on to some key patents related to LTE (Long Term Evolution), the all-important proto-4G technology that's set to power the world's next-generation mobile networks.
A Light Reading probe into the details of the proposed $650 million acquisition of CDMA and LTE assets finds that, although Nortel's official announcement stated it provided "Details of Sale Process for CDMA Business and LTE Access Intellectual Property Rights [IPR]," Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) isn't buying any key LTE-related IPR from Nortel as part of the current proposed deal.

Now Huawei's managing director for the U.K. and Ireland, Samuel Sun, says the vendor is set to be involved in LTE trials with U.K. mobile operators before the end of this year.

Huawei has opened a LTE lab in Tokyo, Japan, to serve as an incubator for LTE technologies and a training facility for the implementation and commercialization of the next-generation wireless technology. Huawei' s research and development teams will also be able to work with Japanese operators to conduct tests on LTE systems before delivery.
