Qualcomm Incorporated, the winner of Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) spectrum in four telecom circles in India, today announced Global Holding Corporation Pvt. Ltd. and Tulip Telecom Ltd. as initial shareholders for its India LTE venture. Subject to receipt of government approvals, Qualcomm will have a 74 percent stake in the venture, while Global Holding Corporation and Tulip Telecom will hold 13 percent each, as required by applicable Indian Foreign Direct Investment regulations.

NTT DOCOMO, INC. today unveiled the brand name and logo of its forthcoming LTE next-generation mobile service for the Japanese market, which is scheduled to launch in December. The brand name is written Xi™ and read “crossy.”

San Francisco Bay Area Selects Motorola for the Nation’s First Public Safety 700 MHz LTE Broadband Network

The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola and the Public Safety Agencies within the San Francisco Bay Area have entered an agreement to build a 700 MHz LTE system. As part of the Bay Area Regional Interoperable Communications System (BayRICS) plan, the system will serve multiple agencies across the greater bay area, including San Francisco, Alameda County/Oakland, Contra Costa County, as well as the cities of Santa Clara and Sunnyvale. This broadband system provides an overlay to the existing Project 25 standards based IP cores and networks.

UK Plots 4G Spectrum Auction

The UK government gave the green light to plans to auction new spectrum that is suitable for Long Term Evolution (LTE) services. The government wants regulator Office of Communications (Ofcom) to organize an auction for 2.6GHz and 800MHz spectrum "as soon as possible." By some estimates, that means the end of 2011.

NTT DOCOMO, INC. announced today that it has signed a licensing agreement with MediaTek Inc., a leading fabless semiconductor company for wireless communications and digital multimedia solutions headquartered in Taiwan, to deploy “LTE-PF,” a mobile-device chipset platform based on Long Term Evolution (LTE), the new mobile communication standard being adopted worldwide for super-fast downlinks above 100 Mbps and uplinks above 50 Mbps.
