Japanese operator KDDI is planning to deploy LTE but will continue to use its existing CDMA network to handle voice traffic. During a keynote discussion at 4G World, Hideo Okinaka, vice president and general manager of emerging technologies and spectrum division at KDDI, said that the company has 20 MHz of spectrum for LTE and is currently working on specifications so that the network will fall back to 1X for incoming voice calls during a data session over LTE.

Voice Over LTE: More Pitfalls Than Promise for Now

Cellular operators worldwide are building, trialing, or planning Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks at an ever-increasing pace. Initially they will use the emerging high-speed wireless technology to provide data services mobile Internet access. But the recent development of a technical foundation for delivering voice calls over IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network infrastructure in the form of the voice over LTE (VoLTE) spec finally provided a standardized way to deliver voice calls in addition to broadband data services over LTE networks. Thus it would seem that there is little to keep VoLTE services from spreading worldwide, as well.

In the quest for new spectrum, especially in the low bands that support cost effective rural coverage, 450MHz has remained surprisingly neglected. The former analog mobile frequencies have been used in some countries, mainly in parts of Asia, Latin America and eastern Europe, for rural 3G, but have remained non-mainstream. Now six carriers want to make eastern Europe a hotbed of 450MHz activity, proposing a harmonized regional deployment of LTE that could allow them to leapfrog other cellcos and countries, in terms of rapid and affordable 4G roll-out.

MetroPCS became the first 4G LTE carrier in the U.S. Tuesday with the launch of the Samsung Craft phone and a 4G network in Las Vegas. But the nation's fifth-largest carrier's path to 4G is unique. Rather than advertising screaming, cable-modem-like Internet speeds, it's looking to use 4G to advance its mission of "wireless for all" - providing decent connectivity to lots of people at very low monthly rates.

New GSA Evolution to LTE report confirms number of firm LTE network commitments accelerates past 100

This latest update to the GSA Evolution to LTE report confirms 101 firm LTE network deployments are planned or in progress in 41 countries, including 3 systems which have commercially launched (in Sweden, Norway, and Uzbekistan). A further 31 operators are engaged in LTE pilot trials or technology tests, ahead of formal commitments to commercial service deployment (these are referred to as pre-commitment trials). Taken together, it means that 132 operators in 56 countries are now investing in LTE who have either firmly committed to deploy LTE systems, or are engaged in trials or other planning activities.

LTE 4G mobile networks will provide businesses and consumers with dramatically increased speeds and capacity to combat the effects of the mobile data traffic explosion such as network crashes. However, only 1 in every 20 subscribers will benefit, a new study from Juniper Research concluded.
With the rate of LTE network commitments at an all time high, the 4G LTE report forecasts that the number of LTE mobile broadband subscribers will exceed 300 million globally by 2015. Most of this growth will occur from 2012 but mobile operators are preparing now as rapidly increasing data traffic from mobile apps and mobile internet usage forces them to react.
