Motorola, Inc. and Nokia Corporation today jointly announced that the companies have entered into a 4G license agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola and Nokia have extended the companies’ existing intellectual property licensing agreement to include 4G cellular technologies, such as LTE, WiMAX and LTE-Advanced. The terms of the agreement are confidential.

Nortel solicits bids for LTE patents

Once-great Canadian telecom network vendor Nortel Networks is reportedly soliciting bids for its portfolio of 4,000 LTE patents, according to Dow Jones Newswires. The news agency notes that the company is divided internally over whether to sell some or all of its patents or whether to retain ownership and monetise the portfolio through a licensing program. Interested parties are required to sign what is being described as a very strict non-disclosure agreement, adds the report. Nortel is being advised by Lazard and Global IP Law Group.

Qualcomm Takes Lead as 4G Patent Holder

Qualcomm looks set to be the leading patent holder in 4G wireless communications after recording 24% of ETSI declarations surrounding LTE, as well as 16% of the 26,000 patents that have potential relevance to 4G technologies generally, including WiMAX. Other notable players in the LTE field include Interdigital (18%), Huawei (10%), LG (9%), Nokia (9%) and Samsung (7%). When considering the whole 4G environment Samsung takes second spot with 12% of all patent filings, and Nokia takes third with 6%.

Just as Samsung's renewal (without lawsuits) of its licensing deal with Qualcomm was the highlight of the chip company's recent Q3 results announcement, so the long line of product announcements at its analyst day last week were outshone by news on the IPR front. Few doubt Qualcomm's ability to compete in advanced cellphone silicon, but the patents licensing business that delivers so much of its profit and industry power has been under far more serious question, as major firms challenge the US giant's model, and the market shifts slowly towards platforms not based on CDMA. So Qualcomm backers were delighted at the news that LG had joined its compatriot in renewing its existing licensing deal, with none of the bitter dispute that surrounded Nokia's renewal last year, and that the big three phonemakers have all agreed to license Qualcomm '4G' technology.

Sisvel today announced that it will hold a two-day meeting of LTE (Long Term Evolution) / SAE (System Architecture Evolution) essential patent owners beginning on February 2, 2010, to discuss the formation of an LTE/SAE patent pool. Participants will include global technology leaders in the telecommunications industry and major international LTE/SAE stakeholders, and the meeting remains open to additional parties that hold an LTE essential patent or patent application as determined by an independent patent evaluator. All parties interested in participating in the formation of an LTE/SAE patent pool are invited to contact Sisvel as soon as possible to arrange an evaluation of essentiality in advance of the February meeting. To ensure completion of the evaluation in time to join the February meeting, patent owners should submit a patent no later than December 15, 2009.

LG licenses Qualcomm for 4G technology

Qualcomm Inc said LG Electronics Co Ltd is one of three major phone makers that agreed to license its 4G high-speed wireless technology, solidifying its position in the mobile market for years.
"This means they have 65 percent of the handset market signed up to long-term royalty agreements," JP Morgan analyst Steven O'Brien said. "We have more certainty in the royalty streams and cash flow streams from the major handset vendors."

As a part of its ongoing effort to bring industry constituents together to advance the licensing of Long Term Evolution (LTE) essential patents and to define milestones for launching a successful LTE patent licensing program, Via Licensing organized a meeting with key LTE stakeholders on September 23, 2009. Thirteen companies from three continents, representing a broad spectrum of the LTE marketplace (including handset manufacturers, network equipment manufacturers, wireless carriers, chipmakers, and essential patent holders) discussed issues surrounding the development of an LTE joint patent licensing program (commonly referred to as a “patent pool”). The results of this interactive collaboration are intended to provide a solid framework for the efficient formation of a successful LTE patent pool.

There's a good reason why Nortel Networks Ltd. seems keen to hold on to its LTE (Long Term Evolution) access intellectual property and not flog it to Nokia Siemens Networks as part of its wireless asset fire sale: Those patents are worth an absolute fortune!
That, at least, is the view of JP.MorganChase analyst Ehud Gelblum, who issued a research note Monday stating that Nortel's LTE patents could generate royalty revenues of hundreds of millions of dollars, possibly even as much as $2.9 billion.
