Voice Over LTE: More Pitfalls Than Promise for Now

Cellular operators worldwide are building, trialing, or planning Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks at an ever-increasing pace. Initially they will use the emerging high-speed wireless technology to provide data services mobile Internet access. But the recent development of a technical foundation for delivering voice calls over IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) network infrastructure in the form of the voice over LTE (VoLTE) spec finally provided a standardized way to deliver voice calls in addition to broadband data services over LTE networks. Thus it would seem that there is little to keep VoLTE services from spreading worldwide, as well.

IMTC is Selected by GSMAs VoLTE Initiative

The International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC) is pleased to announce that it has been selected by the GSMA’s Voice over LTE (VoLTE) initiative to develop usage profiles / specifications and then conduct interoperability testing events for the voice over LTE profile, previously known as the One Voice profile. The GSMA’s VoLTE initiative was set up to drive the global mobile industry towards a standard way of delivering voice and messaging services for Long-Term Evolution (LTE), and will provide a seamless IMS-based solution for voice and text messaging for next generation mobile broadband networks.

Verizon: We're ready for IMS-based voice on LTE

Verizon Wireless Executive Vice President of Network Planning Bill Stone said the carrier has installed IP Multimedia Subsystem technology and is currently testing it on its 3G network. Specifically, Stone said Verizon "will deploy IMS VoIP as soon as we can after the introduction of LTE smartphones," though he declined to provide a timeframe.

Some operators and vendors may already have hijacked the term “4G” for their LTE and WiMAX services, but the specifications for “true” 4G services under the 3GPP umbrella will be published in March 2011 under Release 10, according to current targets.

GSMA Leads Mobile Industry Towards a Single, Global Solution for Voice over LTE

The GSMA today announced it has adopted the work of the One Voice Initiative* to drive the global mobile industry towards a standard way of delivering voice and messaging services for Long-Term Evolution (LTE). The GSMA’s Voice over LTE (VoLTE) initiative has the backing of more than 40 organisations from across the mobile ecosystem, including many of the world’s leading mobile operators, handset manufacturers and equipment vendors, all of whom support the principle of a single, IMS-based voice solution for next-generation Mobile Broadband networks. The GSMA will also lead the development of the specifications that will enable interconnection and international roaming between LTE networks, and will complete that work by Q1 2011.

Multiple Options but No Clear Winner for Voice and SMS over LTE, Finds Frost & Sullivan

Despite the fact that data traffic is growing exponentially, mobile operators are witnessing a divergence of data revenues and traffic load curves due to flat rate price models. Thus, network efficiency must improve in order to ensure that the cost-per-bit to deliver a service is attained at a bare minimum in comparison to the existing cellular technologies. Many opine that the next generation long term evolution (LTE) technology can achieve these goals, with the technology currently being trialled by several operators worldwide.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan, Multiple Options but No Clear Winner for Voice and SMS over LTE, notes that due to the economic crisis, many operators are currently unwilling to deploy LTE that is service-limited – in particular on services that are cash cows i.e. voice and short message services (SMS). Hence, the value of deploying LTE and then limiting the users to basic 2G/3G services is pointless.

Nokia Siemens Networks has carried out the world’s first voice calls in LTE networks using commercial, 3GPP-standardized user and network equipment. The success of the voice calls and SMS texting demonstrate the viability of the One Voice approach to voice over LTE (VoLTE).

Global Telecom Companies Announce a Standards Based Solution for Voice and SMS Services over LTE

AT&T, Orange, Telefonica, TeliaSonera, Verizon, Vodafone, Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks, Nokia, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., and Sony Ericsson have defined the preferred way to ensure the smooth introduction and delivery of voice and SMS services on Long Term Evolution (LTE) networks worldwide.

The above telecommunications industry leaders have jointly developed a technical profile for LTE voice and SMS services, also known as the One Voice initiative. The profile defines an optimal set of existing 3GPP-specified functionalities that all industry stakeholders, including network vendors, service providers and handset manufacturers, can use to offer compatible LTE voice solutions.

Open collaborative discussions have concluded that the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based solution, as defined by 3GPP, is the most applicable approach to meeting the consumers’ expectations for service quality, reliability and availability when moving from existing circuit switched telephony services to IP-based LTE services. This approach will also open the path to service convergence, as IMS is able to simultaneously serve broadband wireline and LTE wireless networks.

Most in the mobile industry agree that Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology is the way forward for data: It can support impressive data rates and has the potential to revolutionize mobile communications with a host of innovative, high-bandwidth applications. Genband, Kineto start voice-over-LTE trials with T-Mobile

Genband and Kineto Wireless are conducting one of the first trials of the proposed voice over LTE via the generic access network, or VoLGA, standard. Both are working with VoLGA’s biggest proponent T-Mobile on a network core trial to prove the viability of using legacy voice and messaging infrastructure to route voice-over-IP calls over future long-term evolution networks.
