ITU-R confers IMT-Advanced (4G) status to 3GPP LTE

The 3GPP candidate technology submission for IMT-Advanced developed as LTE Release 10 & Beyond (LTE-Advanced) was today accepted as a 4G technology at the Chongqing meeting of ITU-R Working Party 5D, having successfully completed Steps 4 through 7 of the IMT-Advanced process in ITU-R, complying with or exceeding the ITU established criteria in all aspects.

Motorola and Nokia Announce 4G Licensing Agreement

Motorola, Inc. and Nokia Corporation today jointly announced that the companies have entered into a 4G license agreement. Under the terms of the agreement, Motorola and Nokia have extended the companies’ existing intellectual property licensing agreement to include 4G cellular technologies, such as LTE, WiMAX and LTE-Advanced. The terms of the agreement are confidential.

LTE-Advanced & IEEE 802.16m WiMAX both officially selected as 4G standard by ITU

According to Korea Communications Commission (KCC), both LTE-Advanced and IEEE 802.16m WiMAX satisfied the ITU requirements as 4G standard, effectively being selected as the ITU 4G standards during ITU-R WP5D meeting which was held from June 9 through 16 in Vietnam. According to ITU, the details of the standard specifications will be finalized by March, 2011 and ITU will officially endorse them as international 4G standards in February, 2012.

ATIS Webinar: Moving to LTE (May 4, 2010)

ATIS - The North American Standards Partner in 3GPP - have an on-line webinar scheduled for May 4, 2010, at 10:00 EDT.

Hank Kafta, AT&T’s VP for Network Architecture will speak along side 3GPP’s Adrian Scrase, to discuss the implications of the Freeze of 3GPP Release 9, and how it delivers the full feature set for LTE networks.

The Webinar will be moderated by Keith Mallinson, of WiseHarbor, himself a leading expert and analyst in the field of mobile telecommunications.

The one hour long webinar will highlight AT&T’s use of the Standards and how the operator plans to migrate to LTE.

Adrian Scrase, Head 3GPP Mobile Competence Center, will also give details of progress on Release 10, with it’s focus on moving LTE towards its’ Advanced state, with targets aligned to the IMT-Advanced requirements for future 4G Systems.

Motorola Adds Industry’s First TD-LTE 4Tx/8Rx Radio Head to 4G LTE-Advanced Capable eNodeB

The Networks business of Motorola, Inc. today announced the addition of a TD-LTE-Advanced capable 4Tx/8Rx radio head with multiple input/multiple output (MIMO) to its 4G - WBR 700 Series LTE eNodeB portfolio. This TD-LTE solution – while similar in size to a standard 2Tx/2Rx LTE eNodeB – enables advanced MIMO schemes including multi user (MU) MIMO and beam-forming to provide unprecedented capacity and coverage. The WBR 700 TD-LTE 4Tx/8Rx with MIMO solution will be displayed in Motorola’s booth at International CTIA Wireless 2010.

True 4G specs to be released in March 2011 - 3GPP

Some operators and vendors may already have hijacked the term “4G” for their LTE and WiMAX services, but the specifications for “true” 4G services under the 3GPP umbrella will be published in March 2011 under Release 10, according to current targets.

Huawei Demonstrates LTE-Advanced Technologies with Record Data Rate of 600Mb/s

Technical papers on LTE-Advanced and TD-LTE in this month's (DEC. 2009) IEEE Communications Magazine

* Device-to-Device Communication as an Underlay to LTE-Advanced Networks: The authors study device-to-device (D2D) communication underlaying a 3GPP LTE-Advanced cellular network as an enabler of local services with limited interference impact on the primary cellular network. 3GPP urges caution over IMT-Advanced promises

No fewer than six technologies have been submitted, seeking approval as official standards for IMT-Advanced, the next wave of wireless systems, which is designed finally to achieve 'true 4G' or gigabit stationary speeds (100Mbps mobile). Whereas a few years ago, few would have seen the need for such performance, now it seems operators can hardly wait to access the platforms that will let them support massive mobile broadband and multimedia usage, and while they may have years to wait for real 4G, they are increasing the momentum behind current technologies, LTE and WiMAX.

3GPP is achieving the goal of unifying the world behind a single cellular standard. This means that LTE and the Evolved Packet System (EPS) are applicable to an even wider set of deployment and migration scenarios than ever before.
